TOWNSHIP LAW INFORMATION The Legislature passed the amendment to the Township law, which extends the sunset provision until 2010. There has been some discussion about loophole in the law which allows the County Council to redraw the boundaries of the townships at will. Currently, the City of Holladay is in negotiations with the County Council to redraw the map of the Millcreek Township to allow them to annex the new Albertson’s on Highland Drive, and it is possible that they already have enough votes on the County Council to push this through. However, at our last Community Council meeting, Mayor Corroon assured us that the County Attorney has stated that no such loophole exists in the law, and that the only way a city can annex an area in a township is to secure the vote of the citizens of the entire township, or to prompt the legislature to dissolve all townships within the county. Remember how the distribution of sales tax works in Utah. When sales tax is collected, 50% of it goes to the State coffers, and 50% goes to the local municipal entity. That means that half of the sales tax collected at any of these locations, instead of going to benefit the residents of unincorporated Salt Lake County, will go instead directly to Holladay, Murray, or Salt Lake City.
